The Berwyn District Civic Association (BDCA) holds a number of community events such as the Berwyn Bonfire, end of year Holiday party, and
neighborhood clean-up events. Below are descriptions of some of the community events that have been sponsored in the past by the BDCA. The BDCA has
sponsored many other community events (i.e. neighbor yards sales, ice cream socials, special events in the park) but, those listed below are events that occur
In the past the Berwyn District Civic Association (BDCA) sponsored a yearly neighborhood event entitled "Berwyn Day". The purpose of Berwyn Day was
threefold: (1) to facilitate interaction and involvement in the event by community members; (2) to provide a venue of games and activities focused on
involving children to help them meet and interact with others in the neighborhood; (3) to serve as an official fund-raiser to help offset some of the
costs of Civic Association activities.
The BDCA board recently decided to stop holding an annual Berwyn Day event and put more resources into other BDCA events. This decision was based in part on the
fact that there are now a number of competing events held in the College Park area. Additionally, the number of volunteers and resources needed to successfully
hold a large neighborhood event was becoming more and more difficult to pull off each year. However, the BDCA will consider the possibility of holding
future Berwyn Day celebrations, but not likely as an annual event.

Berwyn BDCA Bonfire Day
Perhaps the most popular BDCA sponsored event is the annual BDCA Berwyn Bonfire. This event occurs the next to last weekend in October and hence has sometimes
has been refereed to as the BDCA Oktoberfest bonfire. In the past, berwyners were asked to drop off wood (No pressure treated wood or poison ivy) at a designated location any time
the week prior to the bonfire and no later than noon on the day of the bonfire. Now the wood is purchased for the bonfire. The exact time of the bonfire lighting depends on the amount of wood, but it usually
occurs around 5pm. The fire department usually puts the fire out around 10pm. The BDCA supplies hot cider and people bring their own marshmallows and hot dogs to
cook at the bonfire.

The BDCA organizes lots of community social events such as potluck dinners, ice cream socials, and movies in the park.

Neighborhood Night Out Events
Neighborhood night out (local version of National Night Out) is an annual community-building event that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhood a
safer and better place to live. The BDCA often organizes an annual neighborhood night out event that occurs on the first Tuesday in August. We sometimes organize this
event in conjunction with events planned by the City of College Park and also have occasionally organized this event along with the Lakeland Civic Association.

BDCA Annual Holiday Party
The BDCA holds an annual holiday party on either the second or third Saturday in December. The party consists of crafts for the kids, holiday music, and a
wonderful pot-luck assortment of deserts. We also usually welcome a very famous visitor from the North Pole!
